Activities

1Nin is a town in the Zadar county of Croatia, settled on a small island in the middle of a shallow lagoon connected to the mainland by two stone bridges. It is 17 km away from Zadar, well connected with regional road. Population of Nin is 1,700 inhabitants. Main industries are agriculture, viticulture, olive and fruit growing, fishery and tourism.2

Nin was historically important as a centre of a medieval Christian Bishopric and therefore is wealthy in heritage; monuments from early architecture from 8th and 11th century. Until the arrival of the Romans Nin was the main place of Liburns. During Roman times was proud Municipality named Aenona. It is the oldest city of Croatian kings at that time an important seaport. After the two destruction (1571 and 1646) Nin has long been neglected.

3In 879 in Nin Duke Branimir was recognized by the Pope as a Croatian monarch. In the city centre, still today, proudly stands miraculous Church of Holy Cross (Sv. Križ) dated 9th century. This is believed to be the worlds smallest cathedral and at the same time representing the early Croatian architecture. With the form of a Greek cross it is identical as church of St. Vid in Zadar which has engraved portal with the name of the first track and title of county prefect Godečaj. 4The inscription was an enigma for a long time until resolved by painter M. Pejaković from Dubrovnik. The building of church was designed to serve as a clock and calendar, using the position of the setting through the year to set time.
He realized that the dimensions and elements of buildings were designed to capture summer and winter solstice and equinox. Not far from St. Cross Church is a church of St. Anselm. With the addition of some elements of Roman and Gothic architecture, there are excellent examples of the metal production in silver and gold which testify about the Nin’s blooming culture in the early Middle Ages. Among others, two relics, works of Caroline Masters in 8th and 9 century, and the ring of Pope Pius II (15th century).

Nin Beach Sabunike is one of the most famous windsurf spots in Croatia. Characterized by three winds “Bura”, “Jugo” and “Maestral”, each of which has its own charm.
“Bura” has a completely open path from the Velebit channel and often reaches speeds greater than 50 knots! “Jugo”, offshore wind, creating ideal flatwater conditions for speed testing of your boards. Warm summer thermal wind “Maestral” blows every day from 1pm to 6pm and gives you the opportunity of relaxed freeride.

2The best thing is that the Nin Bay is closed on all sides so there is no danger that the wind carries you away to open sea. Sabunike is an ideal location for both experienced surfers, as well as for beginners who will be able to learn their skills in windsurfing school at the beach Sabunike. Spend your holidays actively and learn how to surf, we guarantee you’ll be back again next year in the windy Nin.

3Access to the beach is assured from three sides, two directly from Nin and one from Sabunike, and you can come close to the sea by car. Parking is also provided on the beach.

The bottom is sand and a special attraction of Sabunike is a shallow sea, which in combination with the sandy bottom creates conditions that can be found only in the tropics. At distances up to 200 m from the sea coast is only 1m deep. Ideal conditions for freestyle because each failed trick ends with a nice beach start and instantly you are ready to try again.

Because of the shallow sea, the beach is the most attractive one in the Adriatic to learn Kitesurfing. During the “Bura” wind you will be driving parallel to the entire length of the beach, so you’ll never get out of the shallow zone; unless you want it.

An ideal place for kitesurfing

You wonder, what if I want to drive a formula, and it is so shallow? No problem. On the eastern side of the beach closer to Nin sea is deep enough for the formula and its 70 cm fin.
